Yes, covering your outdoor kitchen island when it’s not in use is great idea, especially if it’s made of materials like wood, metal, or stone. Here are some reasons why:
1. Protection from the Elements
- Rain & Moisture: Covers help protect against rain, which can cause rusting, corrosion, or mildew growth on surfaces like grills, counters, and cabinetry.
Sun Exposure: Prolonged sun exposure can cause fading or cracking, especially on materials like plastic, wood, or fabric. A cover can shield your outdoor kitchen from UV damage. - Wind & Debris: Covers keep debris like leaves, dirt, and pollen from accumulating on surfaces, and can help prevent windblown dust and grime from settling on your appliances and counters.
2. Maintaining Cleanliness
- A cover can keep your outdoor kitchen cleaner by protecting it from dust, dirt, and animal debris, reducing the need for frequent cleaning.
3. Longevity of Appliances & Fixtures
- Appliances like grills, sinks, and refrigerators will last longer when they’re not constantly exposed to the harsh conditions of the outdoors. A cover can prevent premature wear and tear. It can also protect your cabinetry and countertops from stains, scratches, or damage from rain, frost, or extreme temperatures.
4. Prevents Pests
- A cover can deter insects, rodents, or small animals from nesting in your outdoor kitchen, especially in grills and other equipment.
5. Seasonal Use
- In areas with colder climates, covering your kitchen island during the off-season can help protect it from frost or freezing, which could damage plumbing, electrical components, or appliances.
Considerations for Covers:
MATERIAL:
Choose covers made from breathable, water-resistant materials like polyester or vinyl to avoid trapping moisture underneath, which could lead to mold or mildew.
FIT:
Make sure the cover fits snugly and securely to prevent it from blowing away in the wind.
VENTILATION:
Look for covers with ventilation openings to reduce the buildup of heat or moisture under the cover.

In short, while it’s not strictly necessary to cover your outdoor kitchen island at all times, doing so will help keep it in better condition over time and extend its lifespan.

SUNBRELLA
Our Premium All-Season Wing and Tail Covers are made from Sunbrella. This is an acrylic canvas that is highly water resistant, yet very breatheable, and won’t fade or rot for many years. A good selection of colors is available. Sunbrella covers are the best choice for blocking ultra violet and preventing these harmful rays from getting through to the aircraft finish, and this is especially important on fabric covered aircraft.
The easily adjusted straps are made from tough polypropylene webbing, not bungee cords. Because these straps will not stretch, even in high wind conditions, our covers won’t let you down just when you need them most (see photo). Combine this with our snap together Delrin (nylon) side release buckles and you’ve got a system that makes for easy installation and removal of your wing covers.

We use only Sunbrella in our window coverings. This breathable yet highly water resistant material is guaranteed for five years by the manufacturer not to fade or lose its strength because of exposure to the sun, mildew, or atmospheric chemicals.
Our fully adjustable straps are all made from tough polypropylene webbing and easy-to-use Delrin side release buckles. This system allows the cover to be snugged up tight, thereby eliminating abrasion and shifting in higher wind conditions.

WeatherMAX 80 – WeatherMAX
A balanced and cost-effective fabric for applications requiring outstanding durability, higher water repellence …
At only 8oz per linear yard WeatherMAX is the only patented fabric that offers the highest combination water repellency, breathability, dimensionally stability, & strength. Our exclusive HydroMAX+ finish delivers another industry first, the highest hydrostat pressure of a woven fabric without the use of a coating that also retains high levels breathability.
When choosing a fabric for your canvas needs, dimensional stability & UV longevity should remain at the forefront of your decision making process. These two qualities are the lifeblood of keeping a fabric performing & looking good throughout its years of service. Dimensional stability is the achilles heal of acrylic fabric.
Once acrylic fibers are stretched, there is no recovery & the only outcome is unwanted sagging. This continuous stretching eventually causes the fibers to separate causing the cover to fail. Unlike acrylic fabrics, WeatherMAX uses filament yarns & unique weaving techniques to supply a fabric that has the ability to retract back to its original shape from any type of load. UV stabilization is as also an important factor. WeatherMAX yarns are pigmented dyed with our proprietary ColorTite Technology which provides long-lasting fade resistance to match acrylic fabrics and outperform solution-dyed polyesters.
WeatherMAX has nearly the same strength in both directions, 490 warp x 392 weft
These number are critical when looking for a travel cover fabric that can withstand the long days of wind whipping across the cover. The closer these number are, the stronger the fabric, resulting in an overall stronger cover. We’re not saying WeatherMAX covers will never tear, but if it did tear, wouldn’t you rather have a cover that’s less likely to keep tearing after the initial damage has been done?
